Romancing Takayasu's Arteritis
A rare disease. An ordinary life. A remarkable story.
A witty memoir of confusion, chaos and coming to terms in an unwitting lifelong relationship with Takayasu Arteritis (TAK)… A rare, potentially fatal disease with no known cause or cure.
About the Book
Romancing Takayasu’s Arteritis is a candid, true patient story spanning over a decade of coexistence with Takayasu Arteritis (TAK) — A rare autoimmune disease that causes slow, irreversible degeneration of the body’s major arteries.
Weaving together the medical mystery with personal struggles of the author beyond the case history, the book is an effort to create more awareness about Takayasu Arteritis and its diagnostic challenges. TAK mimics symptoms of many other common ailments that can shuttle a patient across multiple medical specialties before the disease finally gets revealed.
The book is written with wit and humour, not to trivialise the disease or the suffering of fellow patients with TAK, but to humanise a life-changing condition. The objective is to put a few smiles on the face of everyone who picks up this unusual memoir. The story may also be a useful resource for medical professionals across the world in understanding the symptomatic progression of TAK from a patient’s perspective. The book is also an outreach to fellow patients with lifelong ailments and their caregivers, with the hope of helping more people start seeing comical twists in the ironies of life. It can be very therapeutic.
The Story Behind The Cover
THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY.
Romancing Takayasu’s Arteritis is not about wooing a Japanese neighbour’s cat with a Greco-Latin name. It is about learning to exist with a rare, potentially fatal disease that is a nightmare to diagnose; has no specific cause; and no conclusive treatment.
It is also the kind of disease that people discreetly Google, before accepting that it exists and you are not trying to be funny.
Takayasu’s Arteritis is an idiopathic disease. The body’s immune system, for no rhyme or reason, decides to inflame the entire aortic arterial network and forgets to stop. Besides little inconveniences, the gradual, irreversible damage can squeeze blood flow to vital organs, cause an aortic split, and literally break your heart.
Modern medicines and surgery offer great support, but the treatment usually terminates with the patient. The drugs that keep you well also make your life hell. It is a life-altering condition that can become extremely despairing. Or the sheer absurdity of the situation may, eventually, become amusing.
A true blessing when fated to traverse with jeopardy…is to pack some sense of humour. This is the story of my blessings – so far.
