The Retro Man

Humorously Heartfelt. Deeply Reflective. Brutally Honest.

The story of a man always more concerned about what is expected of him, than what he expects in life…

About the Book

The Retro Man presents the flip side of the belief that a woman is the lone custodian and supreme victim of nuptials. Quoted from the preface:

“This is the story of a man doggedly and happily stuck neck deep in the quagmire of convoluted, ethereal values of yesteryears that are largely considered defunct today. He is no saint. He is as ignorant, confused and flawed as any other contemporary man. However, his family is his world, his relationships are more important to him than any of his social commitments or career aspirations and that makes him quiet old fashioned by modern standards. This book is about his ideas of being the man of the house.”

“There is nothing astounding about these ideas. If you look around you may find several men who practice some of these ideas without putting them in so many words. Life, for many of us though in varying degrees, is an open book. However, the book of life is not made of gospel truths. It is made of everyday incidents, interactions and experiences which may be quite similar for different individuals, but what each individual derives from them is quite unique. This is the story of a man who is more concerned about what is expected of him, rather than what he expects in life. Again a notion that by modern standards is…quite retro.”

The Story Behind The Cover

A subtly contrived after-party maneuvers a habitually reticent Neel to discuss his queerly happy existence with a ‘friend’ whose notions of life are an antithesis to Neel’s idyllic views.

Committed to suffer Neel’s hackneyed wisdom for one whole night, the man decides to offer some payback by playing a prickly conscience to remonstrate Neel’s outmoded beliefs. The ensuing debate sets off an ideological sparring that spans faith, destiny, roles, characters, and most of all relationships.

Neel unravels his secrets to finding a footing after a turbulent childhood and using a shattering personal failure to turn all the negativity in his life into a mantra for lifelong happiness. Neel’s friend cannot wait to turn that prudence into a ploy to find some joy; but are the results up to his expectations?
