Anyone can be an author. Not everyone survives the 'drafts'.

I meet so many people who say they have a story to tell. Many of them say they made a concerted effort to put their ideas into words. The most common roadblock — the story got told within a few pages. There is actually nothing wrong with this. The greatest of epics can be condensed into a few short paragraphs, depending on the detail you wish to share. For a story to become a book, it has to blossom, get dissected, and be laid out threadbare.

The first manuscript I worked on as an assistant editor was a collection of notebooks with photocopied content pasted in some sequence. These strips of paper were interspersed with handwritten notes and, at some places, instructions to insert ‘relevant text’. I learned how rewriting is the silent protagonist letting writing and authorship fuel their egos to take centre stage. I still believe writing alone does not take me far with an idea. Revisiting and rewriting multiple drafts until the original one seems juvenile tells me I am making progress. There must be an easier way to do this. I hope to upskill someday. Till then, it is the donkey’s way with me.

I would be very ‘artificially inane’ not to mention AI here. I truly abhor the way people are abusing its generative features to become writers and authors nowadays. Especially the ones whose writing skills are strictly limited to generating ‘prompts’. That is the end of my grouse. I think being a writer and author is still fun. I believe I should not give up doing something simply because there are ‘tools’ enabling everyone to do it. Ghostwriters have always been around. Stardom has always outweighed substance in the publishing world. Challenges will always be. I have survived long enough with human intellect to be wary of Artificial Intelligence. I am trying to get acquainted. If we can learn a few things together, it might be fun.

Here are a few manuscripts I could rewrite enough to put between two covers. Please have a look. In the coming year or two, I hope to add a few.

Romancing Takayasu's Arteritis

A witty memoir of confusion, chaos and coming to terms.

Romancing Takayasu’s Arteritis is not about wooing a Japanese neighbour’s cat with a Greco-Latin name. It is about learning to exist with a rare, potentially fatal disease that is a nightmare to diagnose; has no specific cause; and no conclusive treatment.

It is also the kind of disease that people discreetly Google, before accepting that it exists and you are not trying to be funny.

Takayasu’s Arteritis is an idiopathic disease. The body’s immune system, for no rhyme or reason, decides to inflame the entire aortic arterial network and forgets to stop. Besides little inconveniences, the gradual, irreversible damage can squeeze blood flow to vital organs, cause an aortic split, and literally break your heart.

Modern medicines and surgery offer great support, but the treatment usually terminates with the patient. The drugs that keep you well also make your life hell. It is a life-altering condition that can become extremely despairing. Or the sheer absurdity of the situation may, eventually, become amusing.

A true blessing when fated to traverse with jeopardy is to pack some sense of humour. This is the story of my blessings so far.

The Retro Man

The story of a man always more concerned about what is expected of him, than what he expects in life…

A subtly contrived after-party maneuvers a habitually reticent Neel to discuss his queerly happy existence with a ‘friend’ whose notions of life are an antithesis to Neel’s idyllic views.

Committed to suffer Neel’s hackneyed wisdom for one whole night, the man decides to offer some payback by playing a prickly conscience to remonstrate Neel’s outmoded beliefs. The ensuing debate sets off an ideological sparring that spans faith, destiny, roles, characters, and most of all relationships.

Neel unravels his secrets to finding a footing after a turbulent childhood and using a shattering personal failure to turn all the negativity in his life into a mantra for lifelong happiness. Neel’s friend cannot wait to turn that prudence into a ploy to find some joy; but are the results up to his expectations?

🪶Subodh Misra – New Delhi on Flipkart

A lean, no-nonsense book that is a very honest appraisal of family relationships. I can relate to so many incidents in the book. It is an unusual book in terms of its setting…I enjoyed the entire story and absolutely loved the end. An open book of faith I would call it, with lots of value and subtle humour all the way. A highly recommended read for all ages.

Untitled Essay Project

Non-Fiction

I read The Collected Letters of a Nobody by Keith Waterhouse twenty-five years ago. The book still makes me laugh my head off. In many ways, I identify with the bumbling, cynical Mr. Pooter. This ongoing project is my attempt to report and protest against some of the modern-day social and technological traits that are desperately trying to seize control of my life. It does seem like a conspiracy…

Untitled Short Stories Project

Fiction

This ongoing project has been going on for some years now. A fictional place, real-life settings, fictional characters, real-life encounters, and a riot of laughs.
